The Journal of Correctional Health Care is the only national,
peer-reviewed scientific journal to address correctional health care
topics. Published quarterly by the National Commission on Correctional
Health Care under the direction of editor John R. Miles, the Journal
features original research, case studies, best practices, literature
reviews and more to keep you, the correctional health care professional,
up-to-date on trends and developments important to your field. Among the
topics addressed: health services administration, personnel and
staffing, ethical issues, clinical and support services, medical
records, continuous quality improvement, risk management and
medical-legal issues.
Academy members receive a complementary subscription to the Journal
for the life of their membership. For information on author guidelines,
call for reviewers, article abstracts, and individual and institutional
subscriptions, go to the Journal
section of the NCCHC Web site.
Academy members are invited to submit
their contributions for forthcoming issues, which will address
the following topics:
- Harm reduction strategies in jails: What is possible? What works?
- Self-mutilation and self-harm: What are the custody and health
care implications
Essays should be 300-500 words, double-spaced and include your name,
credentials, job title, professional affiliation, city/state. Also
include a phone number. Please send your essay to

The online version of the Journal of Correctional Health Care
is available free exclusively to members of the Academy of Correctional
Health Professionals. To activate your SAGE Journals Online
subscription, follow these steps:
- Go to the Journal of Correctional Health Care
site at
http://jchc.sagepub.com/.
- For first-time users, click on the “Activation/Acct Mgr” link on
the left side of the page.
- On the resulting page, click on the activation link “Activate your
editor/ society member subscription.”
- You will be prompted to enter your Member Number and select your
society from a pull-down menu.
- After you click “Submit,” follow the simple instructions on the
screen. You will create a username and password to use when returning
to the site. Activation takes just a few minutes; you need activate
only once.
Once your activation is complete, return to the JCHC homepage and
select the journal cover for access to the current issue or click
“Current Issue.” To find past issues, click “Select an Issue from the
Archive” in the middle of the screen. To search for articles, either
click “Search for Articles” or use the quick search at the bottom of the
screen.
If you forget your username or password, go to the “Subscriptions”
link at the top of the page and scroll down to the link “What to do if
you forget your Username and/or Password.” You will be asked to provide
some information about yourself. Upon confirmation of the information,
the username and password will be emailed to you.

Journal Self-study Program
Available Online
The Journal of Correctional Health Care
self-study program is approved for the following:
CCHPs: The Certified Correctional Health
Professional (CCHP) Board of Trustees has approved the Journal self-study
program as eligible for Category 1 recertification requirements.
Nurses: The National Commission on Correctional
Health Care is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by
the Illinois Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American
Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
Physicians: This activity has been planned and
implemented in accordance with the Essentials Areas and Policies of the
Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). The
National Commission on Correctional Health Care is accredited by the
ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
Psychologists: The National Commission on
Correctional Health Care is approved by the American Psychological
Association to offer continuing education for psychologists. NCCHC
maintains responsibility for the program.
